The mullet – the business-in-the-front, party-in-the-back hairdo that's been a cultural touchstone since the 1970s – is due for its annual celebration as kids and teens from around the nation vie to be this year's Mullet Champ.
The 2023 Mullet Digital Teen and Kids contests seek to find the boldest haircut among some of the smallest mullet-wearers. Mullet Champ hosts yearly competitions in which anyone can submit photos of their mullet to be selected as the best mullet in the country.
“Are you ready to witness the ultimate battle of the boldest and most daring hairdos in the nation?” the website says. “Look no further, because we’re on the hunt for the most epic mullet in town! And we need your help to find it.”
This year, over 1000 kids and teens submitted to the competition, according to Kevin Begola, founder of USA Mullet Championships.
Begola first started the competition in 2020 out of his store in Michigan and since expanded it nationally.
The final day for voting in the kids competition is Monday, July 24. The final round for the kids will select one winner out of 25, and one teen out of 10.
In addition to the ongoing Kids and Teens contests, the organization also runs a Femulet competition(which ran in May), as well as the upcoming Men’s Mullet and 55+ Mullet.
What's it take to be a Mullet Champ?
Anyone across the country can sign up online for one of the contests and submit a picture. The picture is then featured on the website, where anyone can vote for their favorite contestants.
You can also donate in the name of your favorite contestant on the website. All the money raised goes to the Home for Wounded Warriors.
In addition to the points earned through fan voting and fundraising, a panel of judges evaluates the mullets based on length, style, uniqueness, and showmanship.
The winners receive a cash prize and swag from the sponsors of the competition. They also get a USA Mullet Championships trophy.
